2018 Irish Open
Up here in Donegal, we never like to blow our own trumpet too much. For many years the county has been known for scenic beauty, Magee tweed, football special and more recently our exploits on the GAA pitch. In 2018, this is set to change as possibly the most eagerly anticipated Irish Open ever comes to Donegal.
World Class Field
Part of the ‘Rolex series’ and taking place only a couple of weeks before the British Open, this years event is sure to attract a stellar field. Tournament host Rory McIlroy, defending champion John Rahm and a strong contingent of Irish major winners are guaranteed to be teeing it up. On top of this, there are strong rumours that some of the finest golfers from the USA and possibly even Tiger Woods himself will make the trip to Ballyliffin.
Stay at the Abbey Hotel During the Irish Open
The journey from the Abbey Hotel in South Donegal to Ballyliffin in the north of the county will take around 90 minutes. Guests at the Abbey will be able to escape the hullabaloo surrounding the tournament each evening and return to Donegal Town to dissect the days play on the Glashedy course.
For those of you that want to play golf as well as watch the event, a stay at the Abbey Hotel including a day or two at the tournament as well as a round or two at Murvagh could be the ideal option. If you would like us to put together an itinerary including golf and tournament tickets, just let us know and we will be happy to assist.
Our leisure facilities will provide the perfect wind down after a day of walking the fairways behind the worlds best golfers. Relax in the Jacuzzi, take a swim or enjoy a treatment to soothe the body before dinner in one of our high quality restaurants.
For such a prestigious event to travel to rural Donegal is testament to the standard of golf available in the county. For many years we have remained the hidden secret of Irish golf and this has been reflected in low green fees and quiet fairways. There may be a boom in the county in the coming years so book your golf break at the Abbey Hotel and discover golf in Donegal before the rest of the world does!
